Pioneers of territorial regeneration

Created in 2022, the Pioneers of Our Time Foundation is working to create a new operational system for land regeneration in the Muga basin (100,000 ha).

At the source of the river, the Foundation has promoted La Vall de la Muga living laboratory, an area of 10,000 hectares where innovative solutions for territorial regeneration are designed and tested, so that they can be replicated in other valleys of the basin and in thousands of similar territories in the Mediterranean area.

To achieve its objectives, the Foundation works closely with key players in the region and acts as a catalyst for change, incorporating the bioeconomy, research and education as fundamental pillars of transformation.

It is time to act

StoringCO2 in forests by improving their structure and promoting their maturity.

Conserving biodiversity, habitats and native species through sustainable forest management practices.

Optimizing the water consumption of the forests and, at the same time, generating greater water availability for the basin.

Reducing the risk of fires in the region, minimizing their ecological impact and associatedCO2 emissions.

la Vall de la Muga: A Mediterranean Landscape

In the Eastern Pyrenees of Catalonia, the Muga Valley is a key ecosystem where forests, rivers and agricultural areas maintain the biodiversity and water balance of the territory.

Abandoned landscapes, less water

The loss of rural population and the lack of adequate forest management over the last century have led to a drastic reduction in the water available in the basin: a 49% less water. According to scientific studies (Life MEDACC), by 2050 the Darnius Boadella reservoir could experience up to 26% less water. The main cause of this decrease will not be climate change alone, but the uncontrolled expansion of the forest, which consumes large amounts of water.
